About the borough
South Bound Brook is a small Somerset County borough whose story is tied to the Raritan Valley, the Delaware & Raritan Canal and early settlement along the river corridor. The community was once part of Franklin Township, was known for a period as Bloomington, returned to the South Bound Brook name in 1891 and became an independent borough in 1907.
Today, the borough combines a compact residential community with a walkable Main Street corridor, neighborhood services, restaurants and access to regional transportation. The D&R Canal forms part of the borough's northern and eastern edge and provides a direct connection to one of Central Jersey's major recreation corridors.
History & heritage
Abraham Staats House
Built around 1740, the Abraham Staats House at 17 von Steuben Lane is one of the borough's defining historic resources. The Borough acquired the property in 1999, and it was added to the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 2002. The Friends of Abraham Staats House operate public programs and special events.
St. Andrew Memorial Church
St. Andrew Memorial Church at 280 Main Street is part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolia Center, an important religious and cultural presence in the area. The larger Metropolia grounds extend beyond the borough into Franklin Township/Somerset, so individual facilities should be checked by address.
Parks, recreation & the outdoors
Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park
The canal corridor is a major regional route for walking, running, cycling and history-focused outings. The state park stretches for more than 70 miles, making South Bound Brook a convenient local entry point to a much larger trail system.
Memorial Park

Getting around
South Bound Brook sits close to I-287 and the Route 22 corridor. NJ TRANSIT's Bound Brook station is just outside the borough in neighboring Bound Brook and provides Raritan Valley Line rail service. The station has multiple parking lots, bicycle racks and ticket-vending facilities.
